I'm sorry to say that Jim Powell died in hospital two
days back from injuries sustained last week in a road traffic accident.
This news comes to me from his son, Michael, with whom he had been
living
in recent years. Jim's _Medieval Studies: An introduction_ has
introduced more than one generation to medieval history, and his works
on Innocent III and Crusades are, of course, standards. A wealth of
other publications means that most of us will have something by him on
our shelves. Jim had the enviable gift of lucidity in the face of an
often dauntingly broad subject, and encouraged many a young student with
his genuine warmth and his affection for his subject. A good scholar, a
good friend, a good father, a good Catholic. I am sure that others of
this list could be more eloquent than I am being in this poor note.
