CHI 2001 Workshop: HCI, Politics & the City: Engaging Urban Grassroots
Movements for Reflection and Action (May 2011, Vancouver
Canada)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2010/11/28/chi-2001-workshop-hci-politics-the-city-engaging-urban-grassroots-movements-for-reflection-and-action-may-2011-vancouver-canada/>

Website: http://staceyk.org/chi11workshop/
Deadline for workshop submissions: 14 January 2011.

Grassroots movements shape our cities, cultures and politics. In this
two-day workshop, we invite HCI researchers, activists and artists to engage
with the processes, materials, challenges, and goals of grassroots
communities in Vancouver, the city hosting CHI’11.

Vancouver has a rich history of bottom-up political movements. Our workshop
will facilitate a dialogue around the practical and active engagement of HCI
research with grassroots communities. Working together with local
organizations, workshop participants will conduct explorations of urban
spaces and activist headquarters, participatory design sessions, reflection,
critique and creative design of political artifacts. We hope these
activities result in concrete design strategies, opportunities for technical
interventions and future collaborations in the domain of political
computing. Please read more about our workshop themes and visit our call for
submissions.

2011, Denmark)<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2010/11/25/sider11-student-conference-interaction-design-research-apr-2011-denmark/>

Theme: ENGAGING INTERACTION IN DESIGN
14-15 April 2011, Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark (near Copenhagen)
Dept. of Management Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU)
Deadline for submission: 18 February 2011
DTU is pleased to announce the 7th annual Student Interaction
Design Research Conference (SIDeR). The inaugural conference was held at
Mads Clausen Institute at SDU in Sønderborg in 2005. Since then,
Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg (2006), Blekinge Institute
of Technology in Ronneby (2007), Sønderborg (2008), TU Eindhoven (2009)
and Umeå Institute of Design (2010) have hosted this event. The Conference
has served as a venue through which interaction design students may
participate in, and contribute to, research in the emerging
interdisciplinary field of interaction design. SIDeR is a chance for
students to use their own design projects and reflections on design thinking
from coursework in theory and the practice of design as a basis for an
academic paper. The event will be an occasion for generating dialogue with
students from other universities, for building networks, sharing
perspectives on design and critically reflecting on design practice. We
hereby invite graduate students to come together to present and discuss
their views on interaction design, based on recent work in the area, be it
graduate course work or completed bachelor thesis projects.

*Theme:* “Articulating Design Thinking”
*Dates:* 18 – 20 April, 2012
*Location:* School of Design, Northumbria University
*Website:* http://design.open.ac.uk/cross/DesignThinkingResearchSymposia.htm
Between the 18th and 20th April 2012, the School of Design at Northumbria
University will host the ninth Design Thinking Research Symposium (DTRS9).
The symposium entitled, “Articulating Design Thinking”, will be run along
similar (but different) lines to the workshop-based events that we have seen
in past DTRS and related events such as the “Delft Protocols” in 1994, the
DTRS7 event “Analysing Design Meetings” in London in 2007, and the “Studying
Professional Software Designers” workshop held at the University of
California, Irvine in 2010. At these events, workshop delegates were asked
to respond to a given common set of data (i.e. video recordings and
transcripts).

DTRS9 at the School of Design, Northumbria University will, however, make a
few changes to the workshop-based format.

Design Pedagogy Symposium (Jan 2011, Coventry

We would like to invite DRS members to the *Design Pedagogy SIG
symposium *being
held at Coventry University, on 28th January 2011 .

It was clear from the number of papers on *Design Pedagogy* at the DRS
International Conference in Montreal that it represents a key area of
interest for a significant number of DRS members.

A selection of these papers will form the basis for further presentations at
a one day symposium to be held at Coventry University on Friday 28th January
2011. This will provide an opportunity to look at recent developments in
research and scholarship in these areas, and for colleagues who were not
able to attend the conference it will be a chance to catch up on what is
happening.

The symposium is free to DRS members who let us know they are coming. If you
would like to attend please contact *Michael Tovey* ([log in to unmask])
or *Jane Arthur* ([log in to unmask]). It would be helpful if you could
let us know by 15th December.
