ETHNOMUSICOLOGY FORUM
APPOINTMENT OF CO-EDITOR and REVIEWS EDITOR
The British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE) is seeking to appoint
1. A new Co-Editor for its journal Ethnomusicology Forum which is published
by Routledge Journals (Taylor and Francis Group). The appointee will replace
Dr Laudan Nooshin, who completes her term in the Autumn of 2011.
2. A new Reviews Editor to replace Dr Hwee-San Tan who completes her term in
September 2011.
The new appointees will start in September 2011 and will work alongside Dr
Simone Krüger, the current Co-Editor.
In its twenty years of existence, the journal (known until 2004 as the
British Journal of Ethnomusicology) has established an international
reputation for excellent academic and production standards, and is regarded
as one of the leading journals in the field. We are looking for committed
and proactive individuals to help the editorial team take the journal
forward, building on the strengths we have established and taking
advantage of the possibilities afforded by our association with Routledge
Journals. From 2011, the journal will be moving from two to three issues per
year.
The editorial appointment will be for a period of at least three years and a
maximum of five, starting on 1st September 2011 (with an induction period
over the summer).
The main tasks and responsibilities of the Editors, who work together on all
matters relating to the journal, are as follows:
• To receive and, if appropriate, solicit manuscripts of papers for
consideration.
• To maintain a database of all submissions (including tracking the review process).
• To appoint specialist referees to read and report on individual
papers and to co-ordinate the review process
• To compile constructive feedback to all authors and to work with
those whose papers are accepted, advising on suitable revisions in line with
the recommendations of the referees and with the Editors’ own judgement.
• To undertake editorial and initial copy editing work on the papers,
to assemble all figures in appropriate formats, and to oversee any other
work necessary before the material is passed on to the publishers.
• To assemble the material for each complete issue in line with the
deadlines agreed with Routledge and to liaise closely with Routledge’s copy
editing and design teams as the issue is prepared for publication.
• To undertake proof-reading and liaise with all parties over final
adjustments.
• To consider, in consultation with the Editorial Board, proposals for
special themed issues and to advise the appointed guest editors on all
matters pertaining to the preparation of these issues.
• To appoint new members to the journal’s Editorial Board and to
consult the Board as and when necessary. The Board currently comprises
twenty prominent ethnomusicologists from seven countries spanning four
continents.
• To liaise with Routledge and the chair of BFE over the promotion of
the journal at conferences and other events. Routledge currently undertakes
a significant amount of marketing on our behalf and runs detailed annual
reports on all journal-related activity.
• To chair an annual meeting (usually in the autumn) with the
Routledge production team and the BFE chair.
• At least one of the Editors should be present at committee meetings
of the BFE and should chair an annual meeting of the Editorial Board
(normally during the Easter BFE conference).
For the Reviews Editor post:
• To obtain review copies of relevant, current publications and invite reviews by leading scholars in the field.
We are currently in the process of appointing a part-time editorial
assistant who will provide administrative support for some of the
tasks listed above.
BFE invites nominations for, or expressions of interest in, the post of
Co-Editor or Reviews Editor. Applicants should be experienced scholars,
active in the field of ethnomusicology and with a sound publications record.
Previous editorial experience is an advantage; excellent command of written
English is essential. Our expectation is that the new Editors will most
likely be drawn from within the existing BFE community. Although no
remuneration can be offered to Editors, the BFE will cover expenses incurred
in carrying out editorial duties.
Nominations (including self-nominations) should be made to:
Dr Caroline Bithell (BFE Chair), <[log in to unmask]>
Self-nominations should include a brief curriculum vitae and list of
principal publications, together with a statement outlining your interest
in, and suitability for, the post. All nominations should be received no
later than Friday March 4th 2011. We anticipate making a final decision by the end
of April 2011.
