I would have thought that John Bale would have given a Carmelite
nightmares...

I'm having trouble with the concept of a "more generally accepted
legend"! But isn't the Ismeria version better known because it is
recounted by Anne Catherine Emmerich (who presumably received it in one
of her visions)?
