italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Proposals are invited for the following panel at the SIS (Society for Italian
Studies) 2011 conference in St. Andrews, 6-9 July 2011
From Boccaccio to Calvino: Self-Reflexion in Italian Narrative Fiction
This panel aims to explore and examine the wide range, function and nature of
self-reflexive devices and techniques in Italian narrative fiction. From the
formulaic and incipient self-referential instances of medieval texts, which
begin to highlight the creative and narratorial process, to the subtle and
sophisticated metanarrative devices of the early modern period, not to mention
the more explicit forms and techniques of recent times that expose and flaunt
literature’s artificiality, authors have continually reflected within their
works upon the fictional representation of reality since Graeco-Roman times.
We propose a critical, theoretical and terminological investigation of
self-reflexivity in Italian narrative fiction. We therefore welcome papers on
the following (indicative not exhaustive):
- Self-reflexion and theory (terminology; categories, models,
typologies; diachronic approaches or historic variations; comparative
approaches)
- Self-reflexion and the Italian context (Are there specific Italian
variations of self-reflexion? Culture-specific considerations)
- Self-reflexion and genre (parody; forms that fuse fiction and literary
theory and criticism; autobiografiction)
- Self reflexive techniques (frames; narrative embedding; digression,
metalepsis; mise-en-abyme; marked intertextuality, metaphors, etc. as
expressions of self-reflexion; authorial alter-egos; dialogue with the
reader; representations of reading and writing).
Please email abstracts to the panel organizers before 28th of December: Cristina
