FULLY-FUNDED PHD STUDENTSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM
The Italian Department at the University of Birmingham invites applications from prospective students of outstanding caliber for its 3-year Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) studentship for doctoral research beginning 2011-12. Students registered for fulltime research degrees will also be eligible to apply for the Birmingham College of Arts and Law (CAL) Postgraduate Research Scholarships from January/February 2011.
AHRC and CAL scholarships offer full tuition fees (at standard UK/EU rates) plus a basic maintenance grant or stipend (£13,590 in 2010-11). EU candidates who are not ordinarily resident in the UK will be eligible for fees-only awards covering the payment of tuition fees.
The Italian Department boasts a vibrant research culture and one of the largest postgraduate communities in the UK (thirteen doctoral researchers last year). In recognition of the excellence of its research environment, it was awarded 4 AHRC scholarships for the five-year period 2008-13, one of the highest concentrations in the country. Home to the Leopardi Centre, one of three worldwide ‘cattedre leopardiane’, its six academic staff offer supervision for doctoral theses on literature, visual culture, cinema, politics and cultural studies from Trecento to contemporary Italy. Interdisciplinary projects are encouraged and co-supervision with colleagues from across the School of Modern Languages, Cultures, History of Art and Music can be arranged.
The competition for AHRC studentships opens on 10 January 2011 and closes at 4pm on 28 February 2011. Details of CAL scholarship deadlines will be posted shortly. Since applicants for both competitions must first be registered with our department, we will need to receive expressions of interest by 20 December 2010 and full draft applications by 17 January 2011. Please send expressions of interest to Dr Ita Mac Carthy ([log in to unmask]) and full applications to Dr Paolo De Ventura ([log in to unmask]) by these dates.
