I believe the utility of either assay depends on the clinical condition.
CRP for monitoring ABX treatment in cases of vertebral osteomyelitis (eg.)
ESR is still better (i believe) for temporal arteritis and for sorting out vague clinical presentations.
I have yet to see a one to one CRP to ESR comparison (though I could probably do one myself)

I’m trying to find the reference but I read recently that there is a variant of CRP in some people which does not respond in the same way as the “normal” CRP and that in these patients ESR is indicated.
