1. YORKSHIRE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY AGM SATURDAY 4TH DECEMBER, LEEDS

The YGS website http://www.yorksgeolsoc.org.uk/ now has full details of
the Society's AGM, Presidential Address by Prof. Paul Wignall on "The
greatest extinction: death by fire at the end of the Permian", and the
Presidential Reception and Buffet. These will be at Weetwood Hall, Leeds,
on Saturday 4th December from 3pm. The website also has the Abstract and
some tantalising illustrations for Paul's lecture, and a booking form for
the Reception and Buffet.

2. VERY IMPORTANT SOCIETY NOTICE

Council Vacancies - General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary

Following the decision of Dr Trevor Morse to step down for personal
reasons following a close family bereavement (see the "Word from the
President" on the website), the Society is currently looking for a
volunteer for the role of General Secretary.

The responsibilities of the position includes organising the agenda and
taking minutes at the Society's Council Meetings, organising the AGM and
being the e-mail point of contact for correspondence for the YGS.
Council recognises that the scope and potential workload of this post has
expanded in recent years and proposes to create the post of Assistant
General Secretary in order to ensure adequate support and continuity.  The
division of responsibilities between each post will be formalised through
discussion with the selected Officers.  The Assistant Secretary will in
any event provide cover for the General Secretary at meetings when needed
and may be called upon to take minutes at meetings.

If you are interested in supporting the Society by volunteering for either
post then please contact the President, Professor Paul Wignall, either by
letter (School of Earth Sciences, The University of Leeds, Leeds, LS2 9JT)
or by e-mail <[log in to unmask]>.

3. PUBLICATIONS ON THE GEOLOGY OF YORKSHIRE

While I assure you that I have no business or other interest in doing so,
I thought that some members at least might like to know that Abebooks -
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/ the joint Internet cataloguing and marketing
service for the current stock literally thousands of booksellers around
the world, always has some Yorkshire publications of geological interest.

Apart from anything else, when you browse thew catalogues and see some of
the prices being asked for a single offprint or Part of the PYGS you
realise that the YGS subscription is now even more extraordinary good
value since we added completely free access to the complete run of the
Proceedings from 1839 to the current 2010 issue through the "Lyell
Collection"!

(If you haven't yet registered for your free access to the PYGS on line
you will find full instructions again on our website. You do however need
your YGS Membership number, so watch out for this and make a note of in
when the next YGS Circular arrives through the post: your membership
number is on the address label a couple of line spaces above your name.)

Returning to Abebooks I see that they are currently offering a number of
Yorkshire geology classics at something close to affordable prices in at
least some cases (though some other booksellers seem to have very
different views of what should be a fair price!).

I have noted several copies of two YGS classics:

Dorothy Rayner & John Hemingway's Geology and Mineral Resources of
Yorkshire (YGS 1974): 14 copies listed by different booksellers at prices
from £15.50 (to a breath-taking £138!)

Frank Moseley's Geology of the Lake District (YGS 1978): 12 copies listed
by different booksellers at prices from £20 upwards (to £50)

Other Yorkshire classics include:

Thomas Sheppard's geological Rambles in Wast Yorkshire (Hull, 1905) -
copies offered by several booksellers at prices from £7.50 (to £74.75!)

Kendall & Wroot's Geology of Yorkshire (Leeds 1924) - but make sure both
volumes are being offered - either as two separate volumes or as the
combined volume of over 900 pages) - copies offered by four or five
booksellers at prices from £45 (to £172.50)

Best wishes

Patrick Boylan
