Hi,
I would support Alison's call for submissions on this. As well as health
& demographic data (including at small level geography) benefit data
including disability related benefits like DLA & AA could be included
too, which provides some of the only available data for the number of
people with serious disability. Additionally until the election it was
possible after a bit of a wait to get ad hoc non standard data from the
DWP (such as non published or more detailed data (including by LSOA). I
was advised a few months ago that this would no longer be possible
because of staff cuts. The DWP data available is good quality data,
which is readily available to DWP analysts from a dynamic data base. It
would be a sad loss if such data ceases to become available,
particularly at a time of cuts in benefits. I would encourage people to
make a submission before the December 24th deadline (as below). If we
lose chunks of data we will also lose underlying data for things like
the Index of Deprivation (which I understand is currently being
updated). Also the move to administrative data to support cut down
Government outputs (targets) is likely to become increasingly the norm
rather than data which supports an understanding of inequalities. (I
also note the Marmott review's call for increased LSOA data to
understand local differences in health inequalities).
Thanks
Nigel

Subject: FW: [UNCLASSIFIED] - IMPACT OF SR10 ON THE ONS STATISTICAL WORK
PROGRAMME
I am forwarding this message from ONS. There is particular concern that
ONS' health statistics in their broadest sense and including the
demographic population statistics used both as denominators and as
context may not be considered as part of ONS' core business and will
therefore be vulnerable to cuts. You may have already received this from
ONS colleagues directly, but in case not, I am circulating it more
widely.
The closing date is December 24 and the Health Statistics Users Group
will be submitting a response. So please share your response with HSUG
by copying it to [log in to unmask], but make sure you respond yourself as
well.
Message from ONS
I believe you are aware of this, but I wanted to be sure that you
knew
where on our website to post responses to the user consultation and
also
the closing date. We hope we can bring attention to this at the
forthcoming Maternity Statistics Information Exchange meeting.
IMPACT OF THE SPENDING REVIEW 2010 (SR10) ON THE ONS STATISTICAL WORK
PROGRAMME
I am writing to let you know that ONS has launched a consultation to
help inform our business plans in light of the recent SR10
announcement.
The reductions to our budget announced in SR10 mean that we will need
to
reduce some of our outputs and services and hence we are seeking your
help to determine the shape of our future work programme.
The consultation is scheduled to last for 8 weeks and is due to close
on
24th December 2010. This is shorter than the usual consultation
period.
A longer consultation would mean that we would not be able to take
account of the responses in next year's business plan. I apologise
for
any inconvenience this may cause you.
As well as the formal consultation which is available on our website
at
www.ons.gov.uk/work-programme-consultation,, we would like to meet
with
as many of our key stakeholders as possible over the next month.
These
meetings will help us better understand your requirements in terms of
our statistics and services, how they are used, and if outputs are
cut
to what degree it would affect you, and to answer any questions.
If you would like to meet with us to discuss further please let us
know.
Many thanks,
Julie
