medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All,
I would be very grateful for some bibliographic help.
I am looking for any recent and/or important publications on the history of virtue and vice in the medieval period. I am aware of the huge literature in the specialist field of moral philosophy and moral theology - I am more interested in 'cultural history' approaches.
On vice I know of the work of Morton Bloomfield (the seven deadly sins 1967), Siegfried Wenzel (sin of sloth 1967, and his Speculum article of 1968) and more recently Richard Newhauser's work (eg Averice 2000).
On virtue there is of course all the vast body of material relating to scholastic and monastic philosophy and theology, and I aware that there is a great deal of scholarship around 'princely virtue'. But I don't know of a single study of either 'virtue' or an individual virtue in a more 'religious culture' mode of analysis. I am thinking particularly of something comparable to the history of emotion - Barbara Rosenwien's work, and most recently Sarah McNamer's book on Compassion.
If anyone knows of anything I have missed I would be very grateful to hear about it. I am just updating the literature review of my thesis before submission.....
Thank you,
Janet Gunning
