medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

well, Hank, thanks for that, and it may well prove to provide a Loose Grip on
a Greasy Pole on a Slippery Slope on the way to what i'm looking for, but,
ignerint as i am, i'm thinking that there's a difference between a Breviary
and a Book of Hours.
as i (dimly) understand it, the former is a liturgical book for use by the
Pros; and the latter, while perhaps some kind of "abridgment" of the former,
was strictly intended for lay use.
it's definitely information about the latter which i'm interested it.
specifically, what sort of *private devotional* book might an 18th c. lady
come up with --something that was, perhaps, the Heir to the late middlevil
tradition we know of as Books of Hours?
