medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings to one and all!
In the course of my work on the largest wassail customs reference of all
time.....
I have run into bowls and cups that are called "wassail Bowls"
These are generally turned and carved out of wood.
Most have either a chalice or tulip or goblet form
Although many call these things wassail cups and bowls I have not found
any illustration of a wassail bowl that has this shape. One does come
from Washington Irving but he may well have gotten the terminology from
another place- museum catalog, auction etc....
I have an extensive collection of images -18th century to the present.
However there are no wassail images that are from 17-18th century. There
is a carving from an old house showing a mazer shaped bowl flanked by
two doves but the date has not turned up yet and it is not of the shapes
described above.
The question for you good people is......
Do you know of a description of a chalice or tulip shaped or goblet
shaped object in the context of wassail?
Perhaps someone scratched an image into something- It has to have a
direct Wassail connection.
Many thanks for your kind assistance in advance.
Conrad
