i think that that's called "misanthropy."
i would agree with Jim's assessment of Anthopos' usefulness --provided that
his strong caveat is seriously taken into account:

i generally find Iconography to be Numbingly Boring, but virtually *all* of
the French scholars of the late 19th-early 20th centuries must be seen within
this context which Jim politely refers to as "retrenchment" --i have
encountered it in several cases, including the deliberate (and quite fanciful)
mis-interpretation of 12th c. charters to make them "fit" into the pious
non-realities of 19th c. ecclesiastical reconstructions of the middle ages.
my particular Bête Noire here is none other than l'Abbé Clerval, whose _Les
ecoles de Chartres au Moyen Age (du Ve au XVIe siecle_ (Paris, l895) is really
a quite astonishing piece of erudition.
but, modren (objective, scientific) readers should certainly keep their salt
cellars handy when consulting it.
