We have spoken to colleagues at the British Library about this and they have assured us that CILIP membership negates the requirement to demonstrate a need to use the BL collection. If you are a CILIP member you automatically qualify for a reader pass for 3 years. However, for security reasons, you will also be asked to show proof of address and signature when you register (all potential readers have to do this). Acceptable identification and proof of address documents are set out on the BL website at http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/stp/register/identify/identify.html.
Members of the British Library welcome team have been reminded of the above.
I hope this clarifies things.
Thanks to colleagues at the BL for their help.
