Hi Rebecca
I came across this issue when I planning to recruit parents with a depressive disorder and their children. I had to get NHS ethics and they were very clear that I must include a sentence in all my participant adverts and information sheets to say that if any issues of a sensitive nature were disclosed which caused the researcher to be concerned about the welfare of the participant, I had a duty to inform the relevant social services. I tried to word this as softly yet informatively as I could so that it would not appear to be too threatening but it definitely put participants off and this was equally the case for control parents. There is a clear duty on the behalf of the researcher to disclose any issues to relevant parties that may cause concern of any kind and your participants need to be made aware of this (both the adults and children). It might just be a question of how you word it.

Subject: Limits on confidentiality in research interviews
Hi,
I wondered if anyone knew of any guidance about limits on confidentiality in research interviews with children and adults. I will be interviewing teenagers and adults on potentially sensitive topics and it may arise that they disclose drug/alcohol use, criminal behaviour or child protection issues. I've searched the BPS website and not found any specific guidance, but perhaps one of you knows of some resource? Hope you can help.
Thanks!
Best,
Rebecca
