As authors of the recently released Ofqual guides relating to plagiarism, we are hoping to establish regional advice and guidance events aimed at schools.
We plan to host a day event for the Northern area in November on either the 10th, 17th or 23rd (date and venue to be confirmed once we know how many numbers to expect). We anticipate that the cost of such a full day event would be £50.00 (to include all materials, refreshments and lunch).
The objectives of the event are to allow schools to share and disseminate ‘best practice’ principles regarding academic writing and research skills and also to allow networking in relation to academic honesty.
Ideally, we would like to ask those attending events to participate by telling us how they broach the subject of academic writing, citation and referencing with AS and A level students.
We have trialled a similar event in the North East of England, which several heads of sixth form attended. One issue which became very clear was that although schools follow the JCQ guidelines regarding dealing with academic honesty, none actually had a specific plagiarism policy in place dealing with plagiarism at the stage which does not have to be reported to Awarding Bodies: an issue which Isabel Nisbett from Ofqual (keynote speaker at our 4th International Plagiarism Conference held in Newcastle upon Tyne in June):
First line of defence against dishonest practice
Codes of practice
Institutional policy statements
Open commitment
Cultivate honest environment
Promote correct approaches to acknowledging work of others
[Our italics]
We would hope to offer breakout/parallel sessions to attendees covering the following areas:
* How and why students plagiarise
* Plagiarism Policy and Procedures
* Designing plagiarism out of coursework
* Identifying plagiarism
* Best practice
* Using Turnitin (from the point of view of those who actually use the system) with students
If this event is something that the school would be interested in, please use the following link to register for the event (nb: the closing date for registration is 5pm Friday 15th October 2010):
