The major problem is the one panel with Pilate washing his hands, Christ
carrying the cross, and the Denial of Peter: neither left to right nor
right to left gives strict narrative chronology. Add to that the lovely
juxtaposition of the hanged, dead Judas with the living, crucified
Christ, and the peculiar positions of the women at the Sepulchre. It
seems to me that theological/soteriological points are being made. Back
in the stone age (1979) I argued in an MA thesis that there was a
program focusing on the conditions necessary for the receipt of grace. I
never did anything more with that, but there is a young scholar working
on the panels now who may soon come up with something else.
Best,
Genevra
