medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I knew I had read something relevant to this threat from a Christian source, but it took a while to find it.
William Turner, a 16th-century reformer wrote, "What politic laws are these that ... the water of the font shall be hallowed as though the element took away original sin, and to hold stinking water half a year and more and to put on the coldest day of all winter a young tender infant in it, over both head and ears, whereby many children are lost?"
I have transcribed this from Lacy Baldwin Smith and Jean Reeder Smith, "The Past Speaks: Sources and Problems in English History," 2nd edn (1993), v. 1, p. 293. They cite as their source William Turner [Willyan Wraghton], The Rescuynge of the Romishe Foxe" (Zurich, 1545), ff. Biii-Biiii, Eiii, Hiii. Since this passage is very close to the beginning of their excerpt, it probably comes from the B folios.
