Hi Matthew,
I can't answer most of your query since I'm not a loan rules expert, but
I suspect the LOAN TYPE field you refer to is actually the OPACMSG field
renamed and used for this purpose. (We are just about to do this
ourselves and get the loan period to display). You are correct in
thinking that this field has no influence on the loan rule which one
looks at Location, PTYPE and ITYPE. To edit, look for it in the Fixed
length codes section of general parameters.
I'm not aware of any handy loan rule utility you mention - it would
certainly be useful. Can't help on the system messages you mention I'm
afraid, but someone else may be able to.
Also just to say it's fine to use this list for queries - people are
happy to help each other. Sometimes you might want to ask the worldwide
list if no-one here is able to help or if you feel you'd get a better
response from a bigger audience or if you were asking about something
which we didn't have here.
Anyway, good luck with it all.
Diane

Subject: Loan rules and loan types
Hello,
Apologies for more questions from a Millennium newbie: please say if you
think I should be addressing this sort of stuff elsewhere, like to
Innovative or to the worldwide IUG list.
I'm learning about loan rules this week. Seems fairly straightforward
in concept, but our loan rules here are quite complicated, partly
because of many which are no longer in use, and given the warnings in
the manual about not deleting them while things are still in
circulation, I'm not surprised they've just grown and grown over the
years.
Is there a handy utility anywhere which I have missed to help see which
rules apply? I'd like to be able to type in a location, a patron type
and on item type and for the utility to tell me "rule 23 will be used
for this".
Can anyone tell me where I can find documentation about the LOAN TYPE
field in the item record? It's not listed in the manual page which
details the item record fixed fields, nor is "loan type" in the index.
Colleagues here think that the loan type governs the display in the OPAC
(e.g. "3 DAY LOAN") but has no effect on actual circulation as the I
TYPE governs that. Is that correct, that it's just for display? Does
the LOAN TYPE affect anything else? And if you want to edit their
meanings or add a new one, where do you go? I cannot see anything for
them under Admin->Parameters.
I've got my system messages file out of the system and taken a look.
Thank you to those who helped with this! It does seem to be filling up
again quite quickly with messages such as:
"Failed to determine loan rule for .i18746317 (type 15) and .i18746317
(type 1), item location is scl"
Note that I am sure that one of those numbers is supposed to be a patron
number: in this case the item is type 1 so I guess that the patron is
type 15. The loan rules determiner part of the manual recommends that
the first rule in the table should match everything, i.e. location
?????, patron type 999 and item type 999, and map to a non-loaning rule,
but we don't seem to have done that here. I guess this way I get told
about what people are trying to do which has not been allowed for, but
I'm not sure what the effect at the issue desk is, or at self service
machines, of the absence of a matching rule. Any advice would be
appreciated!
That's probably enough questions from me for this week...
