medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
trolling around the web, i returned to the site of the Institut de Recherche
et Histoire des Texts (Orleans), which
has some interesting databases on-line.
for instance, for Charter Freaks, here is a page from their Telma db, listing
all known *dated* chaters mentioning Chartres from before 1121 (though it now
goes up to 1136,
suggesting that it will eventually have them all):
http://www.cn-telma.fr/originaux/resultat/?rechercheRapide=chartres
each one has a (new) transcription of the text, which means an accurate one,
rather than whatever funky 19th ed. might exist.
here, for example, is an 1126 charter of Bishop Godfrey II for St. John's of
Chartres, concerning the collegial's holdings at Mantarville (AD
Eure-et-Loir,
H 3260):
http://www.cn-telma.fr/originaux/charte3244/
in Rene Merlet's ed. of the St. J. charters there are 5 or six which concern
Mantarville, including one issued by Louis VI, in which he gives up his rights
to _brenagium_ (the right to feed his hunting dogs) at that place.
note that no notice of the previous publication of this charter is given on
that page, suggesting that the IRHT editor doesn't know about it.
turns out that Mantarville is not even a village in the Beauce --near the
border between the Count's land and that of the King-- little more than a wide
place in the departmental highway, just a farmstead.
i'm just feeling my way around this site, but it looks like quite a lot of
stuff will be published on it which is not limited to the charters which
actually deal with a place you search on.
for instance, a search on "Chateaudun"
tuns up a bunch of stuff which does not mention CD, per se, but only the place
of publication of Mabille's Cartulaire de Marmoutier pour le Dunois.
this means that there will be quite a massive amount of charters to be found
on this site, eventually --theoretically, every charter which carries a date
will be there, i assume.

p.s.
for Muzak Freaks, there's a "Catalogue de manuscrits liturgiques médiévaux
et modernes" on the sub-site Aedilis:
