medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Winston Black <[log in to unmask]>
> Does anyone have a suggestion about a useful essay to assign along with a
filming of Bergman's "Seventh Seal"? I show it in a seminar on the Black Death
(i.e. not in a general medieval survey), and the students can handle
some pretty sophisticated arguments.
a rather long "essay," but a pretty good one, and filled with nice, grisly
images that 18-20 year olds will surely grove on:
Millard Meiss, Painting in Florence and Siena after the Black Death: the arts,
religion and society in the mid-fourteenth century.
New York: Harper & Row, 1964. (Harper Torchbook Paperback)
xii, 195 p., [42] leaves of plates : ill. ; 21 cm.
ND621.F6 M5 1964
[orig. publication: Princeton, Princeton University Press, 1951.]
a serious piece of work (some might even say "sophisticated"), though i'm not
sure how well some of his major arguments have aged over the last half
century.
