Are you doing the registration as described in the manual, using
"imported" data? Attempts at using DARTEL on original images, or
tissue class images in native space, are likely to give the error you
report.
Another vaguely possible explanation could be that you did not use the
same number of grey matter images (rc1*.nii) as white matter images
(rc2*.nii).
