medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Dr Jim Bugslag <[log in to unmask]>
>Please forgive a rather ignorant question, but besides the difference between
circular and linear inscriptions here, there is also a difference between
signatures and seals as means of legitimating documents. As an art historian,
I'm more familiar with seals, since they usually feature very interesting
imagery. But could someone comment briefly on signatures and seals as
alternate means of legitimating documents?
as it happens i am at present downloading this typically fine piece of work,
Brigitte Bedos-Rezak, “Medieval Identity: A Sign and a Concept,” The
American Historical Review, CV, 2000, pp. 1489-1533
which might throw some light on your question (i haven't read it yet so i have
to punt).
the article is available on JSTOR
http://www.jstor.org/stable/2652028
and i can send it to anyone who doesn't have access to that.
