Ah, right, I get that - though it seems a bit Byzantine. And we mustn't let ourselves be worried about innocent parties whose business might be affected along the way, eh?

Well, I might as well add my name to the huge list of Stieg Larsson fans. Just finished the 2nd of the Millennium trilogy - why have I waited so long?

Hi Judith,
Part of the issue is around clarifying this very point. Initial advice suggested that any goods where royalties are paid to Israel are banned under the policy, which would include works of Israeli authors, irrespective of where published or sold.
Regards,
Richard.

I don't really understand how a book by an Israeli author is "Israeli goods" unless actually published/ printed in Israel. For example - ISBN 9780701182274, "Suddenly In the Depths of the Forest" by Israeli author Amos Oz<http://bookshop.blackwell.co.uk/jsp/a/Amos_Oz>, was published in London by Chatto & Windus. Doesn't that make it English/ British goods, "goods" referring to the object rather than the intellectual content?

Thanks to everyone who replied on and off lists, particularly those providing helpful links to CILIP guidance / policy.
Just to clarify, we are trying to ascertain our position in libraries with our legal department, who are currently stating council policy - we have not yet fully established whether our stock selection will be affected, despite how the policy may appear. I will of course be using the supportive information many of you have provided in our on-going discussions. In the meantime however, we are bound by the decision of the council.
Given the strong feelings aroused in some of your replies, you may want to view the council minutes where the decision was made - these can be downloaded here: http://wdccmis.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/CMISWebPublic/Meeting.aspx?meetingID=1731
Thanks once again to all those who offered advice & information.
Regards,
Richard.

Apologies for cross-posting.
Our local authority has taken the decision to boycott Israeli goods, which appears to extend to books written by Israeli authors. Whilst we support the principle behind the corporate decision, we are naturally concerned about the message this sends out about how our libraries are stocked and the implications this has.
Does anyone on the list work for an organisation with a similar policy in place, and does it extent to library stock?
Regards,
Richard.
