Having been away (in Edinburgh - not with the fairies) the past long
weekend I forget whether any 'Lis-maps' subscribers have seen my
reaction from USA to my response to 'MAPS-L'. Forgive if you have - or
are interested to contact them over the pond, if not already (in which
case, let us on 'Lis-maps' be aware!)

I should emphasise that the GB Historical GIS's digital collection of scanned historic maps is under no immediate threat whatsoever, but it is not archived as I would like:
== Nobody seems to be funded to archive map images, and part of the problem is simply the amount of filestore required. The rest of our content, i.e. statistics, text, vectorised boundary lines, will all fit on a memory stick, but a single scanned image of a map may take up more space than the whole collection.
== We have had bizarre technical problems with software that understood the geo-referencing metadata on the images mangling the preservation metadata, and software that understood the preservation metadata mangling the geo-referencing.
