This reminds me of digging into Faggergill Mine in Argengarthdale.
We were told (by oral tradition over about two generations) that there was
a cavern under Hurgill Shaft which you could put Langthwaite village into.
After quite a few years trying; and digging through four falls we got to
Hurgill Shaft foot; and yes you could put the Red Lion in there, so we
thought that was that. Another year on and we found a way through past Stang Vein
into a series of caves which led to the biggest cave that could be
expected in the Yoredale series. If you put all the houses in Langthwaite end to
end, you could put the village in there; easily.
It just goes to show that you shouldn't rule out oral tradition.

agreed ! There's nothing to match oral archive -
And however rushed or rough and ready it may be, it's always going to be
invaluable !
