medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Christopher,
Thank you for your kind words.
One of the more interesting aspects of Carolingian sigillography is
indeed the usage of head-gear. While many of the seals show laurel
wreaths, the diadem (and eventually crown) is quite clear on the
imprints of Louis the German, Carloman of Bavaria, Arnulf, Zwentibold,
and Louis the Child. I have photographed the diadems and crowns in
detail, but unless asked will not be posting such shots until I finish
digitizing the rest of my backlog (if I ever do).
Unfortunately, I have not photographed Capetian seals. My archive
consists of images that I shot to support my own research, rather than
to survey any particular field. I extensively studied, and therefore
photographed, Carolingian seals as part of my work on the contemporary
engraved gems (http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/CarolingianGems.html).
Since access to each item had to be carefully negotiated with the
holding archive, I did not request later charters that were not directly
relevant. Of course, if anyone would like to commission photos of the
Capetian material I'd be delighted to oblige!
Incidentally, there are some splendid crowns (combining the diadem with
a covering enclosing the top of the head) with long Byzantine-style
pendilia or earrings on the Ellwangen Casket
(http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Carolingian3.html).
The link for the Charles the Fat bulla works for me. Are other folks
having trouble with it? I do appreciate hearing about problems, whether
with links, faulty labels, or whatever.
Best,
Genevra
