I wanted to respond to an earlier remark by Ken on the category of 'research by design' as a useful category. With the demands of work, I have not been able to return to the thread. I have probably left it too late to expect anyone to return to this thread, and I don't have the time to elaborate in detail at the moment.
But in the course of my normal daily lurking on multiple lists I came across a paradigm case of what I mean by research that has to be done by design, and which leads to useful knowledge.
