medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

>I have my suspicion that in the past few minutes, the e-mail address of one
of our colleagues has been hijacked, and through it a message was sent to the
list, without a subject line and with only an unusual URL posted within the
subject itself.
yes, it looks like Nick Johnston's email account might have been hacked, and
this url sent out (copy and paste in a new window if you want to see what it
is --clicking on it from your email address would probably mean that that
address could be "harvested" as Live Bait):
hglissmeyer.t35.com/mzzkslkwsunj/wgcxzjjgafuwcmjbpv.html
this happened to a friend of mine some months ago, and she, too, had some
Viagra ad sent out under her name.
my guess is that Nick himself probably doesn't even use the stuff, either.
> If you see messages sent to the list that appear to be similar to the one I
have just described, please simply delete them.
good advice.
though, if you are curious as to what it is about (whom to blame), you can
copy and paste the url into a new window --IF you are working from a public
computer with good anti-viral softwhere.
> I think that in order to lessen even further the possibility of spam being
sent to us, I am going to set things up so that when one of us sends a message
to the list, s/he will be sent an automated confirmation request, which is
very simply effected by clicking on a (non-suspect!) link, after which the
message will be distributed to the list.
the Byzantine list (out of U. Missouri) which i sub to has this set up and it
works pretty well --only a slight inconvenience, as you have to confirm your
post, but this is just a matter of seconds.
sounds like a good idea.
