medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Henk <[log in to unmask]>
>>seems to me that your objection to having crosses under foot rules out the
footstool solution, Hank.
> It was an observation, Chris, not an objection.
well, it was an observation objecting to the observation that this artifact
might have been a footstool, in view of its use of Sacred iconography in a
particularly ignominious place (what next, American Flag underwear??).
to which observation, i hasten to say, i have no objection, whatever.
>Maybe most footstools in the early middle ages, especially those of churchmen
(or women), had crosses on them.
maybe.
maybe they wore U.S. flag underwear, too.
but, i would be the first to object to such an observation, unless it happened
to be Reality Based.
that Dog won't Hunt, as we say in the Hills of Southern Indiana.
>> If it is slanted, I would suggest a missal stand. There does seem to be a
slight lip at the bottom edge.
> Google pictures of missal stands and you'll see that this is not one.
will take your word on that observation.
>>it is clearly an object intended more for a decorative (or even liturgical)
purpose than for a [purely] practical one.
> Could be both.
yes, but not a footstool, with that particular iconography.
>Many medieval household items were intricately decorated.
even footstools, no doubt.
but the latter without Sacred iconography, in my observation.
though i can't say that i have seen all movies dealing with the M.A.
>>maybe we should wait and just see how Madonna use it in the movie?
> I may be wrong here but wasn't it the footstool of a sixth century saint? It
didn't have anything to do with Hildy, did it?
well, i guess you are right: Movies are *Never* Anachronistic.
>When you google st Radegund you get some pictures of her sitting in chair...
resting her feet on a square footstool...
with crosses on it?
