Hi all,
Some of you may know that I created a website and open data service about
'blue plaques' about a year and a half ago at at Hack Day in London. It's
called Open Plaques and is available at http://www.openplaques.org/
I'm pleased to say that since then, the project has attracted a small group
of volunteers, who have been steadily collecting data, photographs and
improving the website (which is open-sourced).
It's still very much a bare-bones, 'alpha' website though, which doesn't
have much in the way of design, navigation or usability (all of which are
pretty important, as we all know!).
We have, though, just received a small grant from the RSA to enable us to
start to move things forward. To kick off this next stage of the project,
we're holding an 'Open Day' on Saturday 25th September in London. It's
described in more details in this blog post:
http://blog.openplaques.org/2010/08/registration-open-for-open-day, but
basically the day is combination of outreach and project development.
I realise that taking part in this kind of project might seem like a bit of
a busman's holiday to people on this list, but if you're interested in open
data and volunteer-led projects, I think you'll find it interesting.
All are welcome, the event is free, and you can sign up here:
http://openplaquesopenday.eventbrite.com/
<http://openplaquesopenday.eventbrite.com/>It's a full-day, hands-on event
for all disciplines (design, development, usability, content). If you'd
rather just come for the first hour (which is the 'show' bit, with some
presentations about the project and how the data has been used so far), then
let me know via e-mail.
Cheers all,
Frankie
