The role of public libraries in the digital environment goes to the very heart the discussion of the future of public libraries. If they are to remain local geographically-separate services, then there must be a more realistic understanding of what they can achieve locally, as an online and as a geographical brand. That is a discussion for local councillors and librarians (one would hope they would be involved in the discussion).
But, as Ken points out, the distribution and delivery models in the digital world are different. And, online, collectively, I think libraries are capable of much more, contributing much more value. UK public libraries have demonstrated that with LASER and EARL initatives, as well as with such services as ENquire. And in this collaborative strength, local services, values can also be enhanced and protected.
Who or what has the capacity to think or act globally for UK public libraries? Who or what recognises the true value of acting collaboratively to unlock the public library potential online?
