David (et al.),
A surprise indeed; but there were reasons to put aside globes and take
up postcards. Having attended the opening, and collected a copy of 'A
guide to the Donald McGill postcard Museum' (16p. : col. ill.; 21 cm
[including covers]), I can reveal contents of p.[15]:-
"Globe Museum needs a home! Prior to Donald McGill taking up residence
in this building, we intended to open the United Kingdom's first globe
museum. Numerous weird and wonderful examples have so far been
collected. Here we also intend to fuse science with myth.
If you are a council anywhere in the United Kingdom, and are looking for
an attraction, please, please consider this project.
Please contact us via our website: www.globemakers.com"
I shall be submitting a cartographically-illustrated piece on the McGill
Museum to the 'IMCoS Journal' [=Journal of the International Map
Collectors' Society] for its Winter 2010 issue.

This comes as a surprise since I always thought the plan was to open a
globe museum! Those who came on the Isle of Wight trip during the 2007
SOC Summer School will recognise the museum building as the home of the
Orrery Cafe (well worth a visit if you are visiting the IoW) and the
globe makers Greaves and Thomas.
