I'd fully agree with Alison the value of keeping work in the database - (unless I mis-read the Chris' original question & she was checking to make sure that even if students are deleted, their work's still there!).
As well as picking up cross-year 'helping', it's also very useful if a student tries to use work that was submitted at a different university. We've picked up several dissertations that were originally submitted at a different (UK) institution.
