Dear Tobie,
It’s a project I started during the 90s. The first version of the discussion
about design research subfields is published in my PhD which later was
edited into a book (available www.praxiseducation.com ). The PhD is usually
available from my website at www.love.com.au but I've been rebuilding the
website as it was being blocked by institutional filters due to my name. The
relevant appendices of the PhD are available to download.
Since the PhD, I have collated together a much larger list of design fields
from a variety of sources and put together drafts of a couple of working
papers. Two parts of the new list of design fields that involve others are
the index of design keywords from Design Studies initiated by Nigel Cross,
and a process I was involved in with Ken Friedman, Eduardo Corte-Real and
other in Lisbon, supported by IADE in Lisbon and the DRS, to gather data
about design fields as part of the WonderGround Conference (DRS 2006)
registration (http://www.iade.pt/drs2006/wonderground/index.html ). Since
then, a small group (Fil Salustri, Ken Friedman, MP Ranjan and myself) had
intended to push this further by developing a comprehensive typology of
design fields. This is proving to be more difficult than expected.
Another part of the larger collation of design fields occurred as part of
research I undertook for the Local Economic Development Department of the
City of Wanneroo in Western Australia mapping out the dynamics of the use of
design (all forms) across the city. This linked identified design fields
that are subsumed within other business field names
In parallel, around 2000, my business funded some large-scale research into
the development of design fields over the last 100 years as documented in
several large world-class libraries.
In another linked research project, I identified the relative proportions of
three different groups of design fields ('Technical', 'Art and Design', and
'Other' - 'Art and Design' design fields are about 7% with the rest
divided approx equally between Technical and Other).
My apologies, I'll publish as soon as I can. Time for writing is the
problem!
Best wishes,
Terry

Hi all,
I think Terry & Ken Friedman are the key figures of that effort. I have
been involved only marginally. To the best of my knowledge, there aren't
any papers about it. But I defer to Terry & Ken.
Cheers.
