Nothing to add on calamineries, but Peter's suggestion that a 'minery' on
Mendip was a lead ore processing area is interesting (and follows Gough),
because in the 'North' its means so much more. It is a rather nebulous term
which encompasses the 'law and lore' 'science and art' etc of mining
practice. It is years since I read him, but I seem to remember that Gough
shows an old map of the various Mendip Mineries (four of them?), which do
include smelting and dressing places, but it struck me that he was showing
what we would call the mining field. Perhaps Gough drew his definition too
tightly.
