medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Nothing about building chapels or chantries as penance comes to my mind, but a penance requiring building occurs in the 1324 trials of Dame Alice Kyteler, her son William Outlaw, and their companions, all accused of sorcery. After William confessed his crimes--which also included usury, if I remember correctly--the bishop of Ossory, Richard LeDrede, ordered him to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and to put a new lead roof on his cathedral church.
Best,
John

Most learned, may I pose a hypothetical question?
What kind of crime/ sin/ misdemeanour/ misbehaviour could be expiated by building a chapel or a chantry? Was there any significant difference between chapels and chantries for this purpose? Would this have been imposed by an ecclesiastical court, or was it likely to have been a spontaneous offer by the miscreant?
Actually three questions, or even more. Any comments will be greatly valued.
Pat
