medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The Carmelites originally wore a striped cloak--but only until 1287--and were called fratres barrati, freres barres, etc. I'm not sure if this helps with "rayes" in the 1340s, however the name and memory may have endured, as in the Rue des Barres in Paris.
There is a treatment of this and other striped clothing in the book L'Etoffe du diable, author name escaping me just now. Definitive work on habits is La sostanza dell'effimero. -- Paul Chandler

Could anyone provide some direction on what house might be indicated
by a monastic habit described as "rayes"? Is it perhaps referring to a
lay order? The source comes from France in the 1340s. Any direction
that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
