medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colleagues,
A former MA student of mine is editing a sermon by the Franciscan
Guibert of Tournai. At one point Guibert gives this little story: Vidi
ego ipse archidyaconum magnum quem, cum Dominus percussisset in vita
paralisi particulari propter peccata sua, et miraculose tandem
procedente multo tempore cum ageret in extremis de vita desperans,
apostropham* *faciens ad Dominum, ait “Domine, abstulisti mihi corpus et
ego auferam tibi animam,” et sic obiit.
We haven't been able to track down a source for this, and bviously it
would be nice to know if Gilbert is really speaking from experience
about some archdeacon, or just repeating a known exemplum. If anyone
knows a source for this little anecdote, we'd be grateful for the
information.
Thanks,
Sean Field
