Dear list members,
a friend has a problem. She would like to identify the following,
and I cut and paste from her message:
story in Shulamith Shahar's Childhood in the Middle Ages, p. 78, about a
child 'who in his jealousy, strangled his infant brother as he lay sleeping
in his cradle'. I'm assuming that the mother invokes a saint who revives the
victim. Now, Shahar's ref. for this is Acta Sanctorum, Feb, 3, p. 357. Now,
close inspection of this reveals this to be the life of St Anatolius, bishop
of Salinus in Burgundy, and as far as I can see it doesn't have anything to
do with babies strangled in cradles, but a lot of stuff about Picts ...
I think SS may have the reference wrong - I have tried searching on
'cunabula' and its variants; I am not quite sure about strangling in Latin
... dormien* etc.
Can anyone help? Reply to the list, or directly to:

Meg
