medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> There's always the possibility that they were 'professionally restored' in
the way that the smallest particles of paint were removed by chemical
processes. Restorers from the 1920's to the late 1970's have made use of
these techniques to get really clean results.
a good thought, certainly, but not in this case, i don't believe.
the major figures were first(?) published in 1902 in
1-116 (+plates).
which i just came across earlier today --or, rather, re-came across, after
first seeing it it the mid-'60s, when i first became interested in suchlike
arcane matters.
they have never been in the hands of a private dealer, always in the care of
the cathedral or the local museum.
to the best of my knowledge no one who has written on these particular figures
has mentioned anything --one way or another-- about the polychromy (or lack of
same).
but, now that the question has come up, i'll keep a sharp eye out for that
issue as i go through the literature.
i personally never considered the matter, for some reason, and have always
just assumed that they were not painted.
which opinion i still have, though that does not make the issue any less
vexing.
>Maybe some questions to the museum (?) might clear up things.
go ahead on, Knock yourself Out.
young folks need to have something to do with their time, i know.
