Some excellent references and resonances, thanks all. re. Murch's book, as I recall it he is quite 'physiological' in his approach, seeking rhythms (like blinking, breathing) to synchronise viewers with the dramatic action.
And re. Kitano, fantastic!, as his acting persona is based on an almost zero degree of expression (his ideal protagonist as a director was probably the deaf mute surfer of <Scene at the Sea>
