Hello all,
This is a really timely and useful discussion for us right now.
We currently use an old version of LORLS, but we will be beginning a process of reviewing what the academics, students and Library want from a resource list service. Personally, I think it's very important that we view any resource list service as a fully rounded multi-media/multi-material-type management and delivery approach, not just focus on text based reading lists, as many lecturers will drop film/YouTube clips, sound recordings, images etc into the mix along with the general and weekly reading material. And also add to their lists at short notice. So I guess any approach has to be responsive and instantly/quickly updateable.
For our discussions locally and from discussions at user groups / product demos, I believe we may need to take the following approach. Review what systems the academics and students use: from Moodle through to bib management software to Library Service interfaces to Word docs to dog-eared photocopied printed lists. Review the systems the Library uses: our LMS, OPAC, OpenURL resolver, e-resource A-Z lists, unified discovery service, and the bib management software that we provide and support (Ref Works/RefShare, EndNote etc). It may be that we have all the building blocks we need.
In a way the key thing isn't software as a solution, but a fundamental review of our users needs (the first and most important consideration), and our needs as a library service, and then consider the processes required to meet these needs and which software / structure / service can best deliver/facilitate this. And then take it from there ....
Apologies if the words 'grandmother' 'suck' and 'eggs' come to mind!
Regards

At the moment we use a very simple 'system' - we manage all reading lists through Word documents!
I'm going to start a new thread on the 'how to' issue in a moment...
