Space: the Real and the Abstract
PhD Student Conference to be held on July 6th 2010
Organised by the PhD research community at
The Centre for Art, Design, Research and Experimentation (CADRE)
School of Art and Design, University of Wolverhampton.
Deadline for Abstracts: Tuesday May 25th 2010
This conference will address both the understanding and application of
spatial considerations in Art & Design research. The term 'space' has
a multiplicity of meanings in contemporary culture: it can be
physical, mental, political, emotional, gender-defined, philosophical,
cyber, spiritual and scientific. We are seeking to explore questions,
methods and practices concerning the interactive dynamics between
artwork, design and public and private spaces. The object of this
conference will be to explore both practical and theoretical
approaches to the conceptualisation of space. In particular this year
we are keen to encourage papers that address notions of the real, the
theoretical and practical consideration of the abstract and the
interstices between different understanding and viewpoints.
Ultimately the aim is to encourage the broad understanding of space in
relation to Art & Design and build an informed understanding, which
furthers discourse and promotes creativity in research. Areas of
interest to our research groups include:
Digital Theory, Technology and Practice:
Mapping the virtual and the real: cross-platform exchanges
Environments, collaboration and interdisciplinary practice
Sounds, consciousness and the moving image
Critical Theory and Social Practice:
Critical environmental and public art
Performativity, psycho geography and creative practice
Photography, popular culture and the 'everyday'
Materials and Theoretical Practice:
The space of the work and tacit knowledge
Studio: the site of creativity
Ideas, materials and expanded practices
Pedagogy and Communications:
Learning and teaching creative practice
Visual hierarchies and typographies
Aural/visual cultural history
Creative Processes in the Performing Arts:
Intercultural explorations of body and space
Analysis of the moving performing body
Site-specific environments and intercultural performance
Scenography and the visual artist in performance
Abstracts are invited from PhD students/researchers and should address
one of the areas of interest outlined above. Abstracts should be no
longer than 250 words.
Abstracts should be emailed to: [log in to unmask] no later than 25th May 2010.
Notification of acceptance: June 8th 2010.
Individual conference presentations should last approximately 20
minutes with a further 10 minutes for questions.
If you would like to show work at an exhibition to run in parallel
with the conference please state your interest and append an
additional outline (up to 250 words) with your abstract, this should
include both the form of the work and any technical requirements. An
event will be organised if there is a sufficient interest from
speakers. Equally, we would like to hear from you if you are
interested in being part of a poster session.
