As a female undergrad (in Australia) I always wondered about the
significance of the women’s room. I still used it as a place to nap between
lectures etc. I wonder if 'women only' is a good design idea. Or does it
just proliferate the invisibility of women? How do we design communities
that actively support women as visible contributors? I have convened a
creative research discussion group for the last few years and wondered why
there is generally a significant absence of women. At a recent conference I
had a conversation with Teena Clerk, whose research suggested it wasn’t all
a figment of my imagination. So how do we design communities
to encourage more female engagement? Or doesn't it matter?
Best Wishes
