medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
thanks for your part in putting this on, Tom.
returning to this year's K'zoo conference was something of a Mixed Bag for me,
but the definite Low Point was hearing, from Grover Zinn, that Larry Bond had
passed away.
every year, for over 15 years, i looked forward to seeing him and having a
--usually late night-- chat.
one year he was bursting with pride as he whipped out his wallet and showed me
several pictures of the new baby he and his wife had just adopted from China.
i know nothing about his scholarship (though i have no problem assuming that
it was of the best), but i must say that he was among the most Decent human
beings it has ever been my pleasure to know.

>
> We invite you to the *twelfth biennial conference* of The International
> Seminar on Pre-Reformation Theology of Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary and
> the American Cusanus Society*. */P/lenaries, papers, and working
> sessions will explore the topic of late-medieval biblical exegesis as it
> appears in reform efforts of the 14^th to 16^th centuries. Focusing on
> both hermeneutical theory and practical exegesis, we will give special
> attention to the convergences and divergences of those theologians and
> movements traditionally associated either with heterodoxy or orthodoxy.
> How, for example, would Wycliffite and Hussite biblical exegesis compare
> to that of Jean Gerson or Nicholas of Cusa? More broadly, how might
> these convergences and divergences lead us to reassess traditional
> categories of orthodoxy and heterodoxy in the Late Middle Ages?
>
> Our working sessions will give special attention to the sermons and
> letters of Nicholas of Cusa, translated into English by Thomas M.
> Izbicki. And we will provide two opportunities to assess the life and
> work of our late friend and colleague, H. Lawrence Bond.
>
> The conference committee (Zach Flanagin, Ian Levy, co-chairs, Donald
> Duclow, Philip Krey, and Christopher Bellitto) has also planned social
> hours, battlefield tours, and a Saturday banquet with
> entertainment---all in the midst of colorful, historic Gettysburg. We
