medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: John Dillon <[log in to unmask]>
> Today (11. May) is the feast day of:
> 1) Maiolus of Hadrumetum (d. late 2d cent.?).
> 5) Maiolus of Cluny (d. 994).
i have often wondered about these (literal, at the least) "coincidences" of
names showing up on the feast day.
the phenomenon is certainly common enough, and i usually assume that guys (or,
occasionally, girls) with the same name have been put together on the same day
by the martyrologist composing the martyrolgy.
but here it is a case of a *very* unusual name (does anyone know of other
Maioluses?) held by two guys, separated in time by seven centuries and in
space by the distance from Carthage to Burgundy.
are we to assume that the Burgundian M. was named --either at birth or upon
entering religion-- after the rather obscure (i assume) M. of the diocese of
Carthage?
how else to explain the coincidence?
