Hi Steve
Thank you for your response. We offer similar advice for any online
debates that are used for summative assessment via the discussion board,
but I'm not sure about it in this context. You're right about the need
for robust e-assessment procedures and this is something that we are now
beginning to look into.
I was wondering how the save option works and whether or not it is
reliable. If it is reliable and there is some way of retrieving answers
up to the point that they were last saved, then this might be worthy of
being added to the instructions.

Subject: Re: Summative Assessments with Test Manager
Hi Saima,
The problems arising out of a PC crash, server crash, the internet being
down etc impact not only on summative assessments but also ongoing use
of wikis, blogs journals etc. My only real advice for back-up
procedures is, and I am not sure this helps too much, is to get the
students to write everything in whatever word processing application
they have on their PC (making sure they hit 'save' frequently) and then
to cut and paste the text into Blackboard (assessments, wikis, blogs
etc). In the worst case scenario this should reduce the impact of any
technology failures. Equally, it is important to have robust assessment
procedures to cater for what should happen in case of technology
failing. If you think about it, assessment procedures already cater for
issues which might interfere with normal, non-electronic assessments
e.g. a fire alarm going off during a traditional exam. The same
assessment procedures need to be discussed and modified to cater for
possible failures of technology.
Yours
Steve

experience of running similar assessments and if so what advice you
might offer in terms of back-up procedures in case a PC unexpectedly
crashes or something. Have you found some way of retrieving the answers
up to the point they were completed? Does the save option for each
question help in any way?
