Thanks Eric but there was no intention to use POCT HbA1c in community screening for diagnosing diabetes - it's being considered as a potentially better option than a random glucose for identifying those at higher risk of having diabetes who can then be referred to their GP for full investigation. Interestingly there have been no other replies - hopefully this doesn't reflect lack of involvement of labs in NHS Health Checks!

David Nathan from the US, probably the leading proponent of using HbA1c for diabetes diagnosis, has made it explicitely clear that he does not advocate POCT measurement for diagnostic purposes. He likens it to using glucose meters to diagnose the condition.
