Not as far as I am aware, although John Marmysz's collection sounds interesting in this respect. Freud, of course, is an obvious reference point, as John indicates and I have explored Laplanche's reworking of Nachträglichkeit (deferred action) as Afterwardsness in my own writing on remakes. Van Sant's film is perhaps one of the most extreme remakes, as subsequent posts have demonstrated; taking on Hitchcock could never have been anything other than controversial... I have explored the two films as part of a module that I teach on 'The Remake' and those students who haven't seen the Hitchcock are happy to take the film on its own merits - it does have some, despite its reputation! After all Chris Doyle is the cinematographer...
